Poker News: Unabomber Phil Laak to Challenge Computer at Hyatt Regency

phillaak.jpg

Artificial intelligence is a pretty incredible thing, because the computer isn't doing something that it was pre-programmed to do. It learns along the way and adjusts its actions and decisions to the situation. We've seen a great chess champion lose to a computer-controlled opponent, but can a bunch of 0s and 1s defeat a poker champion?

That question may soon be answered when Phil Laak -- affectionately known in poker circles as the Unabomber -- and Ali Eslami challenge "the most sophisticated poker-playing program yet written." Polaris is the "product of years of research and refinement by a team of artificial intelligence experts at the University of Alberta."

The two poker pros will play 500 hands of Texas hold'em against Polaris at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Vancouver. The challenging event will take place over two days, with the players fighting for a total prize pot of $50,000.
