You may have heard on the news about Vision Vancouver's proposal to ban plastic shopping bags at "large stores". The idea is that this will help reduce our dependence on the petroleum-based bags that end up in our landfills and never really decompose properly. The motion will be put forth next Tuesday and it calls for a report within 90 days "for options to phase out plastic shopping bags at major stores."
A similar effort was put forth in San Francisco where plastic shopping bags became banned this week. “We’ve decided that, boy, if San Francisco can do it, we can too," Vision Coun. Heather Deal said yesterday.
I personally don't think that an outright ban would be appropriate or practical. It would make more sense to discourage consumers from using plastic bags by placing heavier fees when they do use bags. For example, the local grocery store could charge $1 a bag. This way, people are more likely to show up with their own bags.

This is a great idea. Also the switch to biodegradable plastic bags is an alternative solution.
