Pizza Carbon Tax in Place Since June 2007

flatbreadpizza.jpg

How do you feel after sitting through a couple days of the new carbon tax put in place by the BC government? Have you felt the impact of those extra couple of cents on each litre at the pump? We may all be complaining about it, but one Vancouver pizzeria has been charging a carbon tax for over a year and the customers are more than happy to pay it.

The Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company in Kitsilano has been charging a 1% carbon tax on pizza since June 2007. This voluntary "carbon contribution" is automatically added to the bills of patrons, but they can request to have the charge taken off if they so choose. It just so happens that very few people ask to have the "carbon tax" taken off their bills.

Proceeds from the carbon contribution are used to offset the environmental impact of producing each meal. The company buys Renewable Energy Certificates. These "green tags" are "units of electricity generated through renewable energy projects in Canada." Some of the money is also spent on projects with a local school to provide classrooms with energy efficient light bulbs. They also work with Grade 5 students on monthly educational campaigns.

The Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company is not only carbon neutral, it is carbon negative. Restaurant owner Suzanne Fielden estimates the amount raised over the past year to be around $4,000.
