No Whistler Village for Canada's Olympians

whistlervillage.jpg

Well, this is counter-intuitive. You've surely heard about the $131 million Olympic Athletes Village that's being built to house competitors during the games, but it turns out that Canada's alpine athletes will not be making use of that housing. Instead, the athletes will be staying at a secret location in Whistler, accommodation that will be paid for by Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA), the official governing body of ski racing in Canada.

This probably makes more sense, seeing how all of their events take place in Whistler rather than in Vancouver. "The village is more of a staging location rather than where the athletes are actually staying," said Ken Read, the CEO of Alpine Canada Alpin, the governing body of ski racing in Canada. "That means they come through there, but when they are competing they are not staying there."

The same Whistler accommodations will be used by Canada's competitors during the World Cup and Canadian Championships in 2009.
