No Municipal Strike for Richmond

vancouvercityhall.jpg

As the picket lines continue to form in front of Vancouver City Hall, pictured above, talks have apparently gone for the better in suburban Richmond.

According to The Westmount Examiner, a tentative agreement was forged between 1,200 union workers and the City of Richmond, hopefully preventing any strike action from taking place in the island city. A similar deal was also agreed upon in Port Moody. This does not necessarily speak to the resolution of Vancouver's woes, however.

Paul Faoro of CUPE Local 15 says that the contract talks in Vancouver and Richmond are are like apples and oranges. They could not be more different. Faoro is particularly interested in seeing if the Richmond deal is ratified as well as the length of deal. One of the primary disagreements in the Vancouver talks is the length of contract. As it stands, the city's offer is for 39 months, which would bring the contract to a close shortly after the 2010 Winter Olympics. Union members seek job security beyond that date.
