No Fireworks Ban For Vancouver Celebrations

fireworksban.jpg

When Chinese New Year, Halloween, and Canada Day roll around, a good number of people like heading out to the backyard and lighting up a few fireworks. The children can enjoy sparklers, while older folks can have their fun with things like Roman candles. There was a motion set forth to ban the use of explosives at Vancouver City Council, but that motion has now officially been defeated.

What this means is that Vancouverites are still allowed to set off fireworks during these celebrations. There will still be some restrictions, to be sure, but the city council vote on Tuesday ensured that we are able to set off fireworks at all. If the motion passed, citizens would be required to register and get a licence from the federal government to set off fireworks.

Councillor Kim Capri says that the lack of a ban "goes against the advice of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police and B.C. Professional Firefighters Association."
