No Cirque du Soleil 2010 Opening Ceremonies

cirque2010.jpg

The opening ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games were very impressive. Those drummers were amazing and the "footstep" fireworks were even better. With the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler just around the corner, organizers are wondering how they are going to top it. Bejing had acrobatics, but Canada has Cirque du Soleil. That's got to be better right?

Unfortunately, Cirque du Soleil has declined the invitation to perform at the 2010 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, much to the dismay of fans of the famous acrobats, gymnasts, and other performers. Citing the "tight creative control" exercised by VANOC and the IOC, Cirque opts to skip the ceremonies. On the official record, both sides say that Cirque's commitments to other projects prevent their participation.

Without Cirque du Soleil, what is VANOC going to do now? Just hire a local troupe? Take a different approach altogether?
