New Sunset Community Centre Opens Its Doors

sunset.jpeg

The neighbourhood by the Punjabi market on Main Street has been growing steadily for years, but the area has not been served properly by a community centre. The old community centre was build way back in 1950 and it just wasn't big enough to accommodate the growing population. Heck, they had to run daycare out of the changing rooms for the swimming pool. That's just not right.

That's why the newly built replacement, the new Sunset Community Centre, was such a great idea. The dramatic "flower-inspired" building "blossomed" yesterday in South Vancouver when it had its official grand opening. The new Sunset Community Centre cost $12.3 million and received funding from all three levels of government, as well as private donors. The building was designed by architect Bing Thorn, the same person behind the Canada Pavilion for Expo '92 in Seville, Spain.

The building is 2,643 square metres and is designed to meet strict environmental standards. It has a large reflective roof and large windows, as well as geo-thermal heating and cooling. Just because it's big doesn't mean it can't be green. And the children in daycare couldn't be happier.
