New Streetcar to Connect Granville Island, Chinatown, Stanley Park

vancouverstreetcar.jpg

When most Vancouverites consider the transit upgrades in preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games, they look toward the Canada Line -- previously known as the RAV line-- which is designed to connect Richmond, the Airport, and Downtown Vancouver. It has been the cause of all the construction and delays that we have been experiencing along No. 3 Road in Richmond, Cambie Street in Vancouver, and through Yaletown in Downtown Vancouver. But there's another proposition on the table too.

Vancouver city councillors are being asked about the possibility of setting up a streetcar transportation project along three kilometres of track between Granville Island and the neighbourhood of the new Olympic Village. The proposition is to spend $8.5 million "to help prove that streetcars have a place in the transit future of the city." This is not for the construction of the line; it's just for the research to prove that it's worth our while.

As it stands, most of the line has gone unused and there is a small portion being used for the vintage streetcars shown here. The proposed new line will extend from Granville Island, wrap around the Telus World of Science, run through a portion of Chinatown and Gastown, before making its final destination at Stanley Park. There may also be an extension that runs through Yaletown.
