New Look Canucks - Getting Better, But Not There Yet

canucks_new.jpgThey were definitely trying to please everybody here, and in the process may have pleased nobody. I, like many Canucks fans, love the original heritage jerseys. Therefore, I'm in agreement with the sentiments stated earlier by my fellow blogger, Michael. They should've just ditched the whale entirely which most people still view (correctly so) as a corporate symbol from the Orca Bay days gone by. They should've brought back the 'hockey rink' logo, and perhaps just tried to fit 'vancouver' above that logo if they so desired.

I will say this - this new uniform is an improvement over their last jerseys. I absolutely despised their last iteration. There was nothing about it I liked. So at least this is a step in the right direction. The colours of their new jerseys (which are the heritage colours from 1970) are a far better reflection of our province and city. However, I must say, I'm really sick and tired of having such a varied jersey/logo history. I think it detracts from tradition, and it also makes it tougher for different generations of Canucks fans to have a basis of commonality or through-line of symbolism that has any semblance of consistency. Contrast that to Habs fans or Leafs fans, and it doesn't matter if you're 70 years old, or 16, the imagery you have of the team is consistent. I think that is an opportunity that has been forever lost in Vancouver. This new jersey just proves what I have felt all along - they nailed the colours and the uniforms for this franchise back in 1970, and every uniform iteration since then has been a mistake.
