New Computer Tax Aims to Save Environment

computerrecycle.jpg

It's no secret that technology is advancing faster than ever these days. What was a top-of-the-line computer just six months ago is mediocre at best today. While your wallet suffers as a result, so does the environment with all of those old computers and other electronics piling up in our landfills. The dangerous materials found within -- cadmium, lead, mercury, etc. -- seep into our groundwater and that can't possibly be good for our health or for the Earth.

With this in a mind, a new industry-led tax has now been launched in British Columbia. This tax will be levied on all new electronics sold, including televisions, computers, printers, and monitors. This fee is designed to offset the cost of properly recycling and/or disposing of these electronics at one of the 70 e-waste depots in the province. At the low end, you'll have to pay an additional $5 for each laptop; at the high end, large televisions will come with a tax of up to $45. For now, cell phones are not included in the e-waste recycling program.
