NBC Universal Looks for Diversity in Vancouver

multicultural.gif

Television shows are certainly more ethnically diverse than they have been in the past. Asians can now find faces similar to their own in Masi Oka (Hiro on Heroes) and Sandra Oh (Chrstina Yang on Grey's Anatomy). Latinos can turn to guys like John Leguizamo. The list goes on. They're getting there, but TV still isn't quite an accurate portrayal of our society's cultural makeup. And it seems that at least one network is trying to change that.

NBC Universal has sent a team of casting directors to our fair town in search for "ethnically diverse talent." They will be in Metro Vancouver today and tomorrow, looking specifically for actors and actresses of Asian, South Asian, black, First Nations, and latino ethnic heritage. Diversity in gender and age is also a priority.

"It's part of our ongoing commitment to diversity," says Kendra Carter, the director of NBC's Talent Diversity Initiative. "If you take a look at most of the successful shows on air right now, they all tend to relate to the world around us. So it's just a no brainer."

You've already missed today's casting call, but you can hit up the North Shore Studios tomorrow between 10am and noon to visit with the NBC Universal casting staff.
