"Modest" Security Planned for 2010 Olympics

security.jpg

While other people may be very concerned about the security issues surrounding the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver, the official security chief isn't quite as worried. Assistant RCMP Commissioner Bud Mercer says that "the public doesn't want a cop on every corner. Nor do I." As such, the security force to be deployed for the Games will be "modest" and it'll take a "Canadian-style approach."

Mercer has been very open with his approach and he seems to have no trouble in speaking with the media. Contrast this to Chief Superintendent Bob Harriman, the security chief who preceded him. Harriman declined to talk to reporters throughout his five years on duty as head of the Games' Integrated Security Unit.

I'm not sure how I feel about this completely open approach, because if the public is perfectly aware of who is behind the security effort at the Olympic games and how it all works, so will potential bad guys. This could represent a sizable security risk.
