Mike Gillis Named Canucks GM, Will Keep Tambellini

mikegillis.jpg

As you may have heard on last night's news, the Vancouver Canucks have named Mike Gillis as the new General Manager of our city's hockey team. This comes a little over a week after the announcement of the firing of former Canucks GM Dave Nonis. The formal announcement was made today at Mike Gillis' introductory media conference.

Mike Gillis was a hockey player himself in his younger years and, more recently, he has acted as the player agent for many of the league's top players, including Pavel Bure, Geoff Courtnall, and -- most recently -- Canucks captain Marcus Naslund. He will naturally have to relinquish his player agent duties in order to take on the role of GM for the Vancouver Canucks.

Gillis says that he is approaching the position with "a clean slate" and everything is under scrutiny. "I'm going to evaluate everybody moving forward." He says that Luongo and the defensive squad are strong, but they need some more grit and speed up front. Gillis also noted that he will keep current assistant GM Steve Tambellini in place, but he made no explicit mention of keeping Alain Vignault as head coach.
