Microsoft Opening Development Centre in Vancouver

microsoftvancouver.jpg

Looks like the world's biggest software developer wants to expand their presence in the Great White North. Microsoft has just announced that they plan to open a new software development centre in the Greater Vancouver Area. The press release does mention the exact location, but it does say that the Microsoft Canada Development Centre will be ready to begin operations this fall. It will be home to software developers from around the world.

In addition their main offices in Redmond, Washington, just a couple hours of south of Vancouver, Billy Gates and the rest of the Vista-fueled crew have development centres set up in the United Kingdom, India, China and the Silicon Valley.

One of the primary motivations for setting up an office in Canada is that some of the "highly skilled people" that Microsoft hopes to recruit may be "affected by immigration issues in the U.S."

"This centre will help Microsoft remain globally competitive while providing strong economic benefits to British Columbia and Canada," said Phil Sorgen, president of Microsoft Canada.
