Liberal Joyce Murray Wins Vancouver Quadra

joycemurray.jpg

As predicted, Joyce Murray of the federal Liberals won the byelection in Vancouver-Quadra last night. What wasn't expected was how close the battle would be. In the end, Murray narrowly eked by Conservative candidate Deborah Meredith by a mere 151 votes.

While the last few votes were still being counted, Joyce Murray declared herself the victor, despite the fact that she was mathematically the winner at that point. At the end of the night, however, Deborah Meredith would concede and Vancouver-Quadra would send a new MP to Ottawa to represent them.

With all 237 polls reporting, Murray had 10,155 votes (36.1 per cent), compared with 10,004 (35.5 per cent) for Meredith. Rebecca Coad (NDP) had 14.4 per cent and Dan Grice (Green) had 13.5 per cent.

"Vancouver Quadra residents have spoken and I have listened. I am going to keep listening."
