John Furlong Signs Olympic Deal with 4 Provinces

johnfurlong2010.jpg

As much as many of the people in the city would like to think that the 2010 Olympic Games belong to Vancouver, it's just as true that the games were awarded to Canada as a whole. Thus, Vancouver 2010 CEO John Furlong recently signed for separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the premiers of four provinces across the nation.

These agreements with New Brunswick, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador are designed “to explore opportunities for cooperation and involvement leading up to and during the 2010 Winter Games." Each provincial premier has something that they feel they can contribute in collaborating between their home province and VANOC. By including the entire nation, the Olympic Committee hopes the Games will "benefit citizens across the country in the areas of sport development, culture, volunteerism, tourism and economic development."

Previously, Furlong has already signed similar MOU's with Quebec and the Northern Territories.

I would like to thank Mr Furlong, his staff, and all the volunteers for the excellent 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and Whistler. However, specifically, I would like to thank Mr Furlong. I hope this message can get to him - I know he is a very busy man but I think our individual gratitude may be appreciated by Mr. Furlong - I hope so anyway.

Thank you all for an extraordinary effort and an excellent event.

    Best regards

Many olympic atheletes fought hard to rise above personal adversity during these games: some physically, some emotionly and some having to deal with events beyond what I have ever seen before during an olympic competition. Their courage and strength is an inspiration to all. At the same time, Mr. John Furlong, Ceo of the Vancouver Games, showed great strength and character under fire, holding his head high while dealing with those who chose to criticize events at any given opportunity; in some cases, definitely beyond anyone's control. His humanity, warmth, sincerity and sensitivity were apparent at very difficult moments-a man with a big heart. Many thanks, Mr. Furlong, for a magnificent effort. I've been reminded of why I'm proud to be a Canadian. Thank you for bringing us closer together.
    With humility and gratitude-Carol
