Is The Garbage Strike Imminent?

garbage.JPG

As the mercury continues to rise, so do the heated talks between the City of Vancouver and the Labour Relations Board concerning a possible strike by city workers, particularly those who collect garbage and recycling from our homes and businesses. There has been talk of a possible strike for a while now, but it seems that we are very close to the possibility of having another stinky summer.

According to News 1130, a press conference was held this morning wherein Vancouver Assistant Engineer Jerry Dobrovolny (speaking on behalf of the city) said that Vancouver will be offering a 10% pay increase over 39 months and all benefits will remain in place. What's more, he said that the City will not be budging from that.

Union bosses outright rejected the offer yesterday, but the city is encouraging the LRB to put the latest offer to a vote, letting all of the union members decide as a collective whether this contract offer is acceptable.

The stumbling block, it seems, is the 39 month contract term. "The city says it needs three years plus 90 days to avoid the possibility of labour problems over the Olympics. It's not concerned other cities are more flexible on the length of the deal."
