GVRD Home to All Top 10 BC Crash Sites

caraccident.jpg

According to the Westender, ICBC recently released a list of the top 10 crash locations in B.C., and all of them are located in the Greater Vancouver area. This makes sense, considering that there are more cars and more traffic in the GVRD than any other place in the province and these figures are based on total number of reported accidents.

The worst spot in the province is the Willingdon Avenue interchange with Highway 1, in Burnaby, where 352 car crashes were recorded last year.

But risk is arguably greater for motorists using the Knight Street Bridge. That’s because Knight Street’s intersection with S.E. Marine Drive was number two on the list with 304 crashes, and the bridge itself was third with 257 accidents.

The rest of the top 10 list are either on bridges are near the main Trans Canada highway. The Lions Gate, Alex Fraser and Pattulo Bridges are high-risk areas, as are the junctions for Highway 1 at Brunette Avenue (Coquitlam), Gaglardi Way (Burnaby) and 152 Street (Surrey).

The two greatest causes for car accidents, as you'd expect, are high-risk driving behaviours (speed, failing to yield, etc.) and driver distraction (cell phones, GPS, putting on makeup, etc.).
