Granville Bridge cyclists: Stay off the sidewalk!

no-bikes.gif

I want to start this off by saying that I think bikes are great. I am mostly a pedestrian myself, but am by no means anti-cyclist.

However, I end up fuming mad at cyclists on the days I try to walk across the Granville St. bridge. A note to cyclists: unlike on the Burrard St. bridge, where pedestrians and cyclists share the sidewalk with well-marked lanes, the sidewalks on the Granville St. bridge are for pedestrians only. Cyclists riding along these sidewalks -- which are very narrow in places -- are extremely dangerous to pedestrians, vehicles, and themselves. Please, remember you are on a vehicle and stay on the road!

The last time I walked across the Granville St. bridge, six cyclists whizzed by me on the sidewalk, four of them going against traffic (which means they couldn't get off the sidewalk, even if they needed to to avoid hitting a pedestrian). Interestingly, only one of them was wearing a helmet... And only 2 cyclists passed riding on the road, as they are legally required to do.

So, please, cyclists, stay on the road -- or, if you simply must use the sidewalk, get off and walk your bike across the bridge. To do otherwise is reckless and dangerous. If you want to ride on the sidewalk, take the Burrard St. bridge!
