Get ready to pay more for ferry trips as of Aug. 1

BC Ferries will be adding another major fuel surcharge to almost all routes as of Aug. 1.

Fares to the Sunshine coast will increase 9.2%, fares on the three major routes between the mainland and Vancouver Island will rise by a whopping 10.3%, and the 18 minor routes will see fare increases of an incredible 17.6%.

The fares on northern routes will not increase.

That's on top of a 4% increase that was added to all southern routes in April.

I understand that fuel costs are high, but no matter how you slice it, a 17.6% surcharge is a bit ridiculous. The ferries are a critical part of our provincial transportation network, and that's a major jump that could seriously impact some people's cost of living. I know more than one person who commutes to Vancouver from the Sunshine coast. Their commuting costs, between their own increased gas bills and the ferry fare hikes, will soon reach the breaking point. And then what -- buy a place in Vancouver? Ha!
