Get Around the Sea-to-Sky Highway

seatoskyrockblast.jpg

By now, you've surely heard about the massive rockfall that happened on the Sea to Sky Highway, narrowly missing a commuter bus as it was traveling between Vancouver and Whistler. The aftermath has been monumental and the crews have been working hard at trying to clear out the debris and get the highway back into operation. As you can imagine, the work has been quite difficult.

What you see above is an image of the controlled blasts that the crews have been using to help break up the debris and loosen up any of the dangerous rock. Many of these boulders are the size of small houses, so they need to break them up first, as well as clear up the cliff face. In the meantime, the Sea to Sky Highway is effectively closed for some portion.

How, then, can you get between Whistler and Vancouver? While there are commuter helicopters and short-haul flights for you to consider, these can prove to be really pricey. The alternative for vehicular traffic would be to "go backwards", so to speak, and loop back in. Leaving Whistler, you can detour through Pemberton, Lillooet, and Lytton, before finally getting back to Vancouver. Expect the trip to take up the majority of your day.
