Garbage Collectors Strike Set for Tomorrow

garbagehouse.jpg

Oh, the drama. With negotiations breaking down between the City of Vancouver and CUPE local 1003 -- the union that represents the city's outdoor workers -- it seems that we might be in for a stinky summer. Vancouver's garbage collectors are in a position to start strike action Thursday and based on how things are going, it seems pretty likely that this strike is going to go through.

Union president Mike Jackson, according to The Globe and Mail, "said the union is not planning on starting with full job action." Instead, "garbage collectors and other outdoor workers will likely be operating under a work-to-rule order and overtime ban."

Bear in mind that this strike action not only affects garbage collectors, as CUPE 1004 represents all of the city's outdoor workers, and this includes some services at community centres as well as lifeguard's at public swimming pools.

It seems public union workers rarely manage to negotiate a new contract without going on strike. Meanwhile garbage piles up in our homes putting everyone's health at risk. I stumbled across http://temporarygarbageman.com a site put together by a couple of local college kids offering to take peoples trash to the dump for a small fee. I just thought it was interesting that while some refuse to work others jump at the opportunity in hopes of making tuition a little less painful.
