Forsooth! Some Culture

The 2007 season of Bard on the Beach is in full swing now through to September 23rd.

Now I will confess to dozing off through a few of Shakespeare's fine works....and me an English major too! But I have to admit the spectacular setting down at Vanier Park, the acting, the gorgeous costumes and the creative sets, do tend to keep me thoroughly involved in these productions.

I also have to admit that I have not been in a while.

But.

They have a great lineup this year. Taming of the Shrew is one of my favorite plays. It is a fun and fast paced piece with a tongue in cheek look at the gender wars.

Romeo and Juliet has already gotten some great reviews with a refreshing new take on the story of lovestruck youth.

A bookend to Anderson's performance is Bob Frazer's Mercutio. The character is hot-blooded but Frazer's Mercutio is also horny as well as hot. Frazer's chiseled good looks, physicality, tight jeans and raunchy gestures set off sparks. One of the most entertaining scenes of the evening is Mercutio's sexual advance on the nurse. Anderson ends up sitting on the lap of someone in the front row to avoid Mercutio's pursuit. Between them, Frazer and Anderson punch this production through the tent roof.

As far as the summer lineup of things to do in Vancouver, Bard has to be on the list. It epitomizes the Vancouver lifestyle. Theatre and amazing scenery all rolled into one.

You can't beat it.
