Fish Farm Sea Lice Killing Wild Salmon

Salmon.jpg

There is no cuisine more stereotypical of Vancouver than salmon. We love that fish as sushi, simply grilled, as salmon Wellington... the list goes on. We love that fish and you'll find it on nearly every menu in the city. Unfortunately, it looks like our wild salmon stock is at risk, and the danger is stemming from the fish farms.

Some folks refused to eat farmed salmon because of a number of health reasons, and they think that the wild stuff is much safer and overall better. The wrath of the fish farm is far-reaching however. According to 18 prominent scientists and researchers, "there is no question that sea lice from fish farms are lethal to wild salmon." They go on to say that there is "no evidence to the contrary."

An open letter calls for "immediate installation of stronger barriers between wild and farmed salmon, closed containment rather than the typical open pens at fish farms, as the only safeguard."
