With so much local attention focused on 2010, it's easy to forget there is another bid race taking place for the 2014 Winter Games. The usual suspects from 2010 are there, PyeongChang and Salzburg and they are joined by Sochi, Russia to round out the three finalist cities.
Sochi has to be considered the underdog in this race despite coming with the highest price tag (investment), while PyeongChang which gave Vancouver a run for its' money would figure to be the favourite to be chosen as the host city this time around.
No matter who is chosen to host the 2014 games each of the remaining bids have all apparently sought consultation with Vancouver's John Furlong who masterfully guided Vancouver's bid to success. He has the rabbit's foot, so why not tap his brain if you can, and they all did.
Each city wants to accomplish different things via a bid win. Russia has never hosted the Winter Olympics and would like the world stage to showcase and re-brand a modern, contemporary Russia. South Korea wants the games to act as an impetus to bring the North and the South closer. Austria wants Salzburg's rich Olympic history to experience a re-birth. The IOC voting takes place today in Guatemala and pundits everywhere are expecting this vote to among the closest ever.
