Federal Liberals Head to Vancouver for New Leader

newdion.jpg

As you've surely heard, Stephen Harper was reelected as this country's prime minister, leading the Conservative Party back into Ottawa. Stephane Dion accepted full responsibility for the loss on the part of the federal Liberal Party and, as such, is prepared to step down as its leader. He's still sitting at the top of the party in the interim, but he will step aside when a new leader is chosen.

So, who is going to be the new leader of the federal Liberal Party? Well, all of the delegates will be congregating in Vancouver next year to make that decision. The date for the party convention has been set for Saturday, May 2. The entirety of the convention runs from April 30 to May 3rd. There had been some comment about holding the convention all the way on the West Coast, seeing how so many members are coming from Central and Eastern Canada.

The entry fee for any of the leadership candidates has been set at a whopping $90,000. This is substantially higher than the $50,000 refundable deposit paid by candidates in 2006. Each candidate can spend no more than $1.5 million on his or her respective campaign.
