You would think that with all the snow we experienced last month that Vancouver would be overflowing with flood-like conditions. We've always been blessed with plenty of fresh water, offering some of the best quality drinking tap water on the planet. Unfortunately, the snowpacks on the mountains are nowhere near where they should be at this time of year.
BC River Forecast Centre's Allan Chapman notes that the snowpacks are only at 60% of where they normally would be at this time of year, pointing toward possible drought-like conditions by the time summer rolls around. The runoff from the snowpack will be diminished and this results in low water levels in the rivers and reservoirs in the area.
High elevation snow was close to a record low, according to Chapman, and the spillover effects of this will be felt when the snowpacks start melting. The lower water levels could not only have adverse effects on our lifestyle, but also on the local aquatic life.
