Earthquake Rattles Snowy Vancouver Island

portalice.jpg

It seems that the incredible snowfall that we've been experiencing is not the only wrath from Mother Nature that we've encountered. Early Christmas morning, a pair of earthquakes were reported off the coast of Vancouver Island. Thankfully, no one appears to be hurt at this time, but you can imagine what can happen when you combine a quake with mounds of snow.

The first earthquake measured 5.9 on Richter Scale, occuring just after midnight about 160 kilometres southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia. This was too far off the shore and too small of a magnitude, according to Natural Resources Canada, to be generate any sort of tsunami.

The second earthquake, a 4.3, happened a half hour later in roughly the same location. The epicenter has been identified as being about 10 kilometres below the surface.
