Downtown Eastside: The Musical?

bruce.jpg

Broadway musicals take on a lot of different topics. We've got some guy wearing a mask and playing a piano. We've got a bunch of felines prancing around and singing. And now we're going to turn our attention to Canada's poorest postal code too.

Coming to Vancouver is a new musical based on the life and struggle of Bruce Eriksen, a man who died in 1997 after living for years in the Downtown Eastside, surrounded by its many problems with prostitution, poverty, and drug abuse. Bruce: The Musical chronicles Eriksen's life, but it also provides a lot of history about the neighborhood as well. Eriksen died at the age of 67 from liver cancer.

The play runs until Sunday. More information and tickets can be found at http://www.theatreintheraw.ca/tickets.html.
