Don't Drink the Water

biohazard.gif

If you live in the rural Langley-Surrey area, you are advised to not drink the water from your private wells. This is because a study of private wells in the area revealed that half of the 98 wells tested "have arsenic levels above acceptable levels." That can't be good.

The Ministry of Environment and the Fraser Health Authority commission the study and determined that the arsenic is naturally occurring. This hopefully means that there is no foul play involved, nor is there any toxic dumping from local companies. They say that the arsenic is leaching into the wells from surrounding soil and bedrock.

This discovery is a concern, because "long-term, low-level exposure to arsenic in drinking water is linked to lung, liver, bladder, and several types of skin cancer." Boiling is not an effective method of removing arsenic from the water. Also bear in mind that residents will not be subsidized in any way for the testing and treatment of the water.
