Do We Need More Cabs in Vancouver?

vancouvertaxi.jpg

As a resident of Vancouver, I don't make very much use of taxi services. For trips closer to home, I just take a short walk. For longer trips, I have my own car to get around town. It's not much of an issue. If I know that parking will be a pain, I may take public transit. However, for visitors to our town, cabs can prove to be an invaluable resource. Unfortunately, it seems that taxi service is a little lacking around these parts.

According to the president and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver, passengers from cruise ships arriving in Vancouver oftentimes have to wait two or more hours to get a cab. It's not like they can hop on a bus most of the time either, considering the amount of luggage they may be lugging around. I'd imagine that a similar predicament is experienced by some people arriving at Vancouver International Airport.

Port Metro Vancouver CEO Gordon Houston, Mayor Sam Sullivan, and Tourism Vancouver would all like to see an increase in the number of taxi licences in Vancouver, but it seems that there isn't as much of an interest in the position. Even if they were to increase the number of licences, who would drive those cabs? Having a tourist wait three hours for a cab isn't exactly the best of first impressions, after all.
