Demonstration Stops Commuters, Protests Transit Hikes

protest.jpg

The CBC is reporting that a protest was held this morning at the south end of the Granville Bridge in Vancouver, blocking all traffic entering the downtown core. This was in protest of the proposed transit fare hikes that would see one-zone monthly passes increase by $5 and single fare tickets rise by 25 cents a piece.

Organized by the Bus Riders Union, the protest forced cars and transit buses heading into downtown Vancouver "to pull over to the side of the road, which meant commuters had to walk across the bridge to work." One of the objectives of this peaceful protest wasn't to disrupt the morning crunch, but rather to draw attention to the proposed fare increases. July Chan, one of the organizers, called the protest a success. "I think people know [about the fare hikes now.]"

The vote by the TransLink board of directors is scheduled for June 27. Although fares may increase, they would still be cheaper than equivalent transit fares in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.
