Dave Nonis Strikes Single Canucks Deal, Swaps Matts

mattcooke.jpg

Fans of the Vancouver Canucks had high hopes about today's NHL trade deadline. Rumors have been running rampant about who Dave Nonis would be bringing to town, because while we have the solid goaltending of Roberto Luongo, the team needs another scoring threat.

As such, we've heard rumors about the Canucks acquiring everyone from Peter Forsberg (who signed with Colorado) to Mats Sundin (who stayed in Toronto). We also heard about Hossa, Jokinen, and Richards. Unfortunately, none of these guys ended up in Vancouver.

Instead, Dave Nonis only made a single trade on deadline day, shipping Matt Cooke (pictured) over to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Matt Pettinger. Their first names aren't the only thing that these two players have in common; they're also both left wingers and have a very similar playing style. Matt Cooke, 29, is the older of the two (Pettinger is 27) and he has spent all of his nine NHL seasons with Vancouver.

Nonis needed to make a big trade today and he disappointed. Luongo cannot be pleased.
