Thanks to the work of people like Al Gore, we are all a little more aware of the impact that our daily lives have on the environment. At the same time, many people make their livelihoods from jobs that have the unfortunate side effect of damaging Mother Nature. Truck drivers have to keep hauling cargo, pilots still have to fly their planes, and electronics manufacturers still have to provide us with gadgets.
Unfortunately for at least one Vancouver company, the push toward green energy and the recent downturns in the economy have provided for a severe one-two punch. Western Canadian Coal Corp. will be reducing its Brule and Wolverine operations in British Columbia, largely due to a reduced demand from steelmakers.
Western Canada doesn't use much in terms of coal for energy purposes, but those carbon deposits still play a vital role in our everyday lives... like in the creation of steel products. Western Canadian Coal Corp. lost about a quarter of its stock value on the news, bringing the closing price on Tuesday to a mere 80 cents.
Production will be ramped down and many of its employees will be directly affected.
