Cops Crawling All Over Downtown Tonight

vpd-partypooper.jpg

If you're planning on heading downtown tonight for one of the rowdy New Year's Eve parties, you're advised to stay on your best behavior, because a huge police presence is expected from the folks at the VPD. Vancouver Police say that New Year's Eve is typically an annual "tension-filled" event, so they're stepping up their presence to help control the crowds (and their behavior).

As with their experiments earlier this year, the VPD plan on shutting down two blocks of Granville Street (from Helmcken to Robson), because this is typically party central. This entertainment district will be under the strict surveillance of Vancouver's finest.

"I guess a good way to put it is that we are going to unpack people there."

The police presence will be highly visible and they're allowing pedestrian traffic to walk on the streets. "We're hopeful it will allow people to come downtown and enjoy themselves safely without all the fights and street disorder we've seen in the past."

So, have fun out there. Just keep it safe and civilized.
