City Strike Officially Extends to Library Workers

library.jpg

This strike is turning out to be a lot more serious than we had first anticipated. First, people thought that they'd have to put up with a lack of garbage pickup, and then soon, we discovered that community centres would be closed as well as several city-run recreational facilities like the Queen Elizabeth Pitch & Putt golf course. And now, it's gone even further.

For the first time in their 77-year history, Vancouver library workers walked off the job this morning. All 21 library branches around the city are closed as a result. If you're concerned about the books that you already have out, don't worry, because they said that late charges will not be assessed for books kept beyond their due dates as a result of this strike. People are encouraged to keep their books until the library opens again. Whenever that is.

According to The Globe and Mail:
The main issue the union is concerned about is achieving pay equity for its female-dominated work force. Ms. Youngberg said that librarians in Toronto, where pay equity was achieved several years ago, earn $7 per hour more than those in Vancouver.
