City Hall Employees Must Pay for Parking

cityhall-parking.jpg

This may sound a little surprising for most of us, but did you know that the staff working at Vancouver City Hall have been parking at their workplace all these years without having to fork out a single dime? Meanwhile, the rest of the people working in the area -- which includes Vancouver General Hospital -- have either had to go hunting for free parking or fork out the money to pay closer to the office. That's about to change.

No, the area surrounding Vancouver City Hall will not suddenly become meter-free. Instead, staff working at Vancouver City Hall will now have to pay for the privilege of parking their cars at the underground parking lot. The daily rate will be about $6 a day, generating about $450,000 over the course of a year. From this funds being generated, 50% will be used as rebate for annual transit passes.

The idea is not to dig a hole through the respective wallets of City Hall employees, but to rather encourage them to stop driving to work and start taking public transit whenever possible. I'd imagine that an extension of the Millennium Line to Cambie Street would certainly aid in this effort as well.
