CBC Radio Orchestra Calls It Quits

oldradio.gif

The last radio orchestra left in North America is officially dead, despite several efforts to try and keep the show alive and kicking. CBC Radio Orchestra, based out of Vancouver, has had its plug pulled, bringing an end to an era.

The 35 freelance musicians that make up the orchestra were told by CBC Radio music head Mark Steinmetz that the orchestra would be disbanded in September.

Colin Miles, head of the Canadian Music Centre, an organization that promotes Canadian composers, said his understanding was that Steinmetz considered axing the orchestra an internal CBC matter and had no plans for a public meeting.

CBC Radio Orchestra has been around since 1938, when it was founded by John Avison. The original troupe consisted of 25 musicians and expanded to 35 in 1952.
