Canucks' Playoff Dream Ends. What Now?

vigneault.jpg

With last night's 2-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, the Vancouver Canucks have sealed their playoff fates. Or rather, their lack of playoff fate. The Canucks will not be making it to the NHL's second season this year and the organization has to start considering what they will do for next year. As fans, we've been told "this is the year" nearly every year. If we weren't told that, we were always told, "There's always next year."

Where does that leave the Canucks now? Heading into the summer, many key players will be unrestricted free agents. Among the UFAs at the end of the season are team captain Marcus Naslund and the legendary Trevor Linden, as well as Brendan Morrison, Byron Richie, Brad Isbister, Curtis Sanford, Aaron Miller and Mike Weaver.

It's obvious enough that the core is not working and the Canucks need to make a change. In this way, Saturday's game against Calgary could be the last for Naslund and Linden, at least as Canucks. Should they trade away the twins too? Whatever the case, Dave Nonis says that the team will be "very different next year."
