Canucks Are Still Courting Mats Sundin

It's clear that the Vancouver Canucks are in a bit of a rebuilding stage. With the departure of long-time team captain Markus Naslund to the New York Rangers and the likely departure of iron man Brendan Morrison, our city's hockey team is in dire need of some offensive firepower. They've already got one of the best goalies in the league and a very solid defensive core.

As you recall, Canucks GM Mike Gillis set out a $20 million offer to Mats Sundin, the currently unrestricted free agent of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This was a two-year deal that included very heavy signing bonuses. When Mats said that he would need some time to consider his future, most people figured that this was a denial of the Vancouver offer. Apparently, that's not the case.

"I want to give him a little time to get his head around playing here and the team that we have," said the Canucks general manager, who will reduce the term to one year if that would lure Sundin. "A lot of things that are going on that are not in the public domain I'm not going to speak about concerning Mats. The only public statement he made, it's easy to take it a certain way. We're confident we made a significant offer to a real top-notch player."
