Canadian Olympics Committee - Gone Too Far?

The Olympics Committee for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games has claimed proprietary use over many words associated with the Olympics. Use of the Olympic logos and words are trademarked and local businesses, radio/TV shows, and advertisers are prohibited from using words or phrases such as:

Gold Medals
Winter
Vancouver 2010

Olympia Restaurant.jpg"The measure is part of a worldwide effort by the brand-conscious International Olympic Committee to thwart what it calls “ambush campaigns,” sports-themed advertising during the Olympics by companies that are not Olympic sponsors," according to the New York Times.

But what about this - The Olympia Restaurant on Denman has been operating for 15 years and is a local favorite for Greek food and is now being told that they are not allowed to use a sign that has been theirs since the 1990's.

It can be fair to say that McDonald's won't be introducing the "Gold Medal Meal" and there won't be any "Olylmpic Sized Sales" going on leading up to and during the games. But is this going too far? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.
