Bedbug Epidemic Spreading in Vancouver

bedbug.jpg

Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite.

You might have to take that warning a little more seriously, because according to health officials, bedbugs are spreading across Vancouver. The tiny insects -- which are visible to the naked eye -- are known to reside in hotels in the Downtown Eastside, but they're starting to pop up in other residential areas around the city. According to Dr. John Baltherwick, the spread is due to people who "occasionally go to the Downtown Eastside and do naughty things."

In the grand scheme of things, bedbugs are essentially safe and carry no harmful diseases. However, when they bite, they cause "itchy, welt-like bumps."
