Bard on the Beach -- Made it with 3 days to go

Yesterday, I finally made it to Bard on the Beach to check out King Lear. I took advantage of the fact that I don't have to be in an office all day and checked out a 1 p.m. (half price!) show.

What the tickets page doesn't tell you (though the schedule page does, so not sure how I missed it...) is that the September matinées are really "student matinées" so the audience was almost entirely made up of high school kids out on a field trip. (There were about 15 "general public" seats in the whole place.)

Let me tell you, watching a long, complicated Shakespeare tragedy surrounded by high schoolers is an interesting experience! They giggle at foul language, depictions of feeble old age, and gunshots (not quite sure why on the last one). But, strangely, it brought the play to life in a way that watching with a stuffy grown-up audience wouldn't.

In any case, Lear was excellent, though it went off in a strange candy-musical direction from time to time. There are only 2 days left to catch this year's Bard on the Beach performances, but if you've missed it, keep an eye out for next year's season in the spring!
