Baby Beluga in the Deep Blue Sea

beluga.jpg

Swim so wild and you swim so free.
Heaven above, and the sea below,
And a little white whale on the go.

Sorry, I couldn't help but to throw in that Raffi reference when I heard about the latest addition to the Vancouver Aquarium family. Qila, the 12-year-old resident beluga at our city's aquarium, survived a three-hour labour before giving birth to a new baby calf. On-site vets have not yet been able to identify the sex of the newborn, but they believe that the beluga is a female. Qila's mate, Imaq, was placed in a separate pool during the birth process.

This is the first baby for Qila, so it's great to hear that the process was successful and went on without too many complications. Considering that more than half of all belugas in the wild die, the successful birth is even more important. The new calf's grandmother, Aurora, is also a resident of Vancouver Aquarium.
