2010 Winter Games Get Thousands of Ontario Volunteers

volunteer.jpg

We already know that a good number of people who live in and around Vancouver are willing to volunteer their time and expertise for the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympic Games. We have people who will volunteer to answer the phone, usher people to their seats, and perform all sorts of other duties that are absolutely crucial to the success of the Games.

We didn't expect, however, how much of a response that VANOC would get from people outside of the province of British Columbia. As it turns out, thousands of people from Ontario have signed up to volunteer for the 2010 Games, even though there are no promises of paid accommodation or any other sort of monetary compensation. It is on a volunteer basis, after all.

To date, more than 8000 people from Ontario have thrown their names in the volunteer hat for the 2010 Games and organizers couldn't be more pleased. "We are really pleasantly surprised," said Dick Vollet, work force vice-president for the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee. "We've had a phenomenal response from right across the country. We're over the top about it."
