2010 Olympics Welcome Ski Cross Event

skicross.jpg

If I remember correctly, host cities each have the opportunity to introduce a single new Olympic event. In the past, we've seen the emergence of things like beach volleyball, but for the 2010 Games, we'll be watching Olympic-level ski cross for the first time.

Ski cross is said to combine "the thrill of freestyle skiing with the competitive rush of downhill racing." Whereas most other downhill events are timed and then the competitors compare these results, ski cross will have four to six skiers face off against one another simultaneously, racing down a technically demanding course with a series of obstacles. They'll have to transverse a terrain that involves banked turns, jumps, rollers, and tabletops.

In this way, ski cross is actually a lot like motocross, except the competitors use a set of skis and they travel at speeds as high as 70 kilometres per hour. The event is single elimination with the fastest two skiers advancing to the next round.
