You've surely noticed some of the, ahem, complications that the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games organizers have had to deal with when it came to the Olympic torch relay. Protests caused a rather major hurdle for the torch to get its way to Beijing for the games and based on this, VANOC is rethinking how the torch relay will work in 2010.
Instead of an international affair, the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics will only have a national torch relay. This is according to VANOC head honcho John Furlong. "The torch relay will be announced at the end of this year. It will only be in Canada,.
The torch relay will last 106 days and span 35,000 domestic kilometres.

How proud we will be to have the torch carried nationally, again!
I carried the torch in 1988, my 1km run was in Eastern Ontario.
I would love to be a part of it again. As an adult now I understand the passion and emotion and the meaning behind the relay. As a child I don't think I truly appreciated every split second of my run. As an adult I know stopping to "share the flame" and including everyone letting every Canadian possible touch the torch is what it's all about, a patriotic duty. Carrying the torch and knowing it is making it's journey across our beautiful country leaves a real sense of ultimate meaning. I think that if the torch is carried nationally, we should be proud and embrace the event. If I don't get the opportunity to carry again, I only hope that as a bystander I will once again have the opportunity to touch and share the experience of the torch with my two children. We patiently await the Olympics !
