2010 Olympic Security Goes To the Dogs

vpd-dog.jpg

As we get closer to the 2010 Olympic games, the issue of security is becoming more and more important. Our city will play host to thousands of visitors, athletes, and diplomats from all around the world and it is of paramount importance that they all stay safe from a variety of threats. Mayor Sam Sullivan has emphasized this point on countless occasions.

As part of the preparation process, the RCMP have been been working heavily with their canine companions, because the police dogs "will be an integral part of the team helping to maintain security at the 2010 Winter Games." The Olympic training for the dogs has been taking place since 2005.

Some of their most important training has been to recognize materials associated with explosives, rather than training to take out attackers and other threatening individuals. Many dogs have already been familiarized with the locations during venue construction, so they'll know their way when it comes time for a real patrol.
