2010 Olympic Games To Be Carbon Neutral

whistlerski.jpg

Vancouver is known for its green initiatives. We are one of the very few places on Earth where you can take a walk on the beach in the morning, go mountain biking in the afternoon, and hit the ski slopes in the evening. In an effort to have the smallest environmental impact possible, organizers of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver and Whistler have pledged that the games will be carbon neutral.

This follows recent news that the team signed an UN Environmental agreement stating that they will minimize "the environmental footprints of the events before, during and after the Games." By striving to be carbon neutral, the result should be no net emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Whether this will be achieved through the use of electric vehicles or through a series of carbon offsets remains to be seen.

UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said, "Through the Olympic movement, we can further sustainable development by holding green Games and boosting global interest in the environment. UNEP welcomes VANOC's goal of carbon neutral Games and is proud to be a partner is this important endeavor."
